Through Our Fingers
Witness together how powerful an accumulation of grains can be.
Audience is asked to participate: touch sand, co-inscribe, & name protective aspirations aloud.
Do you have cherished memories of sandy places?
“Through Our Fingers“ is an educational art project illuminating sand as an under-appreciated resource, that needs freedom to move without loss to acquisitive practices, and our creative interventions toward restoring it to shorelines.
The project goals include three components: a multimodal interactive installation, an audience-involved performed ritual, and a workshop covering both making a sample batch of papercrete--to encourage home construction projects in such material sans sand--and a design brainstorm on ways attendees could advocate sand use-reduction practices at business and government levels.
An eventual goal is presenting this work at gallery, community centre, or festival settings, in a thematic show among other disabled artists in Canada, of works suggesting hopeful ecological relations. Specifically, pieces highlighting our uniquely informed perspectives proposing adaptations and restorative practices we all can live decently with, instead of ones focused on eco-despair or fury.
As we critically need de-colonial and anti-speciesist worldviews, disabled artful reflections on sufficient, interdependent presence with the earth can spur understandings we need embodied. Acknowledging the pain of how imbalanced human relations with ecology often are, uplifting the potential in striving for more attuned ways, my work aims to promote conversation with peer artists. To co-develop with me a space celebrating disabled artists modeling a truly inclusive eco-stewardship politics, get in touch.
